Airlines Surfboard Check-in Allowance

November 14, 2016

I will follow you

When travelling around Asia's surf spots, bringing along your own surfboard is a guarantee to get the right gear for your riding needs and abilities. South Bali's surf shops offer a large selection of affordable new and used surfboards that can please all surfers. Anywhere else in Asia and Indonesia, there is either no surfboard for sale, surfboards with severe dings, or expensive surfboards.

The cost of extra care

While it is not much of an issue for a road trip to Malaysia’s surf spots, travelling by air with a surfboard can incur additional cost: the surfboard must be loaded on top of the baggages not to suffer any damage. This special handling is an extra cost for the airport and the air carrier that may be reflected on the air fare paid by the passenger.

Charging systems

There are usually 3 ways for the airlines to deal with checked-in surfboards:

- Include the surfboard in the standard free baggage allowance

- Include the surfboard in a purchased baggage allowance

- Include the surfboard in a sport equipment baggage allowance

Before you book a flight ticket for your surf trip, check the total weight of your gear (surfboard + bag + protection padding) as it could impact you choice of airline based on the charging system (particularly relevant if you plan to travel with a heavy longboard).
