SRI LANKA / East Coast

Surf season: year-round.

Best time:

May to October (bigger swell)

Break type:

Mainly beach breaks (reef break at Arugam Bay)

Going there from Singapore:

1) Fly 3h45mn direct to Colombo

2) Drive 7 hours to Arugam Bay

About the place:

The wave of Arugam Bay is often mentioned as one of the best in the world. It is also famous for being too crowded during the high season, May to October. As elsewhere, being in the water at dawn will help to beat the crowd and the sea breeze that usually comes around at midday.

There are plenty of other surf options around Arugam Bay, following the coastal roa: going north, on the way to Komari (30mn), and going south, to Okanda (60mn). Further than Okanda, it is possible to surf in the vicinity of Kumuna National Park or Yala National Park (better get a guide).

Because of the long trip from Colombo airport, Sri Lanka's East Coast is not a weekend destination. However, the scenery inland is beautiful and worth the drive.

Surf season: year-round.

Best time:

November to April (more favorable wind)

Break type: Beach and reef breaks.

Going there from Singapore:

1) Fly 3h45mn direct Colombo

2) Drive 2h30mn to Weligama

About the place:

Driving or riding along the beautiful coastal road is the best way to explore South Sri Lanka's surf spots. Weligama is a safe sandy bottom reef break, ideal for beginners and for intermediates when the swell gets too big. The bunch of the surf spots lie within a 15km raduis around Weligama: from Matara in the east, to Unawatuna and Galle in the west. Further West after Gallé, there's a few more surf options around Hikkaduwa.

The most favorable winds happen in the dry season, November to April. However, the biggest waves come during the wet season. Therefore, South Sri Lanka offers year-round surfing possibilities. Regardless the season, best is to get up early and surf before the onshore breeze.

Reachable within an overnight trip (flight + cab ride), South Sri Lanka is a good destination for a long weekend holiday. Weligama area is linked to Colombo airport by a straight and wide highway which makes the trip quite relaxing.
