Surf season: year-round.

Best time:

April to November (bigger swell)

Break type: Beach and reef breaks.

Going there from Singapore:

1) Fly 1h45mn direct to Bandung

2) Drive 6 hours to Batu Karas

About the place:

A long and slow right hander rolling over a safe sandy bottom in a protected bay... Batu Karas main beach, Legok Pari, is always referred as the best place to learn surfing. The only peak is an easy reach that can get quickly crowded. The biggest waves come from April to November.

When the swell gets smaller, more exposed spots still offer challenging waves: Karang (The Reef), 5mn away, and Bulak Benda, a 30mn ride to the West. To the east, the beach breaks of Pangandaran can be reached within an hour.

The road trip from Bandung can be a hassle. One airline occasionally flies from Jakarta Halim Perdana Airport to Nusa Wiru Airport near Batu Karas (12km). Check their website for updates.

Going there from Singapore:

1) Fly 2h10mn direct to Yogyarta

2) Drive 2h30mn to Pacitan

About the place:

Pacitan is initially known for its bay harboring sandy bottom waves ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers. It is famous for its upcoming advanced surfer break, Watu Karung, which draws the crowd since local pro surfers put the name on the map.

Going east and west, there are several other beaches with almost empty waves. Going on a road trip can be an exciting idea, but the further you go from the main beach the wilder it is, with limited accomodations.

Here is an interesting guide to Pacitan surf.

PACITAN

Surf season: year-round.

Best time:

April to November (bigger swell)

Break type: Beach breaks.

Going there from Singapore:

1) Fly 2h10mn to Yogyakarta

2) Drive 1 hour to Parangtritis

About the place:

Parangtritis Beach is an easy reach from Yogyakarta. This long stretch of sand is fully exposed to the ocean and is known to have very strong currents during the big swells season from April to November. As it gets messy as the size of the waves increases, Parangtritis is the place to go when the surf is flat everywhere else in Java.

Going west, along the straight coast line until Suwuk Beach, and going east, on the way to Pacitan, plenty of uncrowded waves await. Not to be explored alone given the remoteness of some of the places. Limited or no accomodations available.
