Indonesia / BALI

Surf season: year-round.

Best time on West Coast:

April to November - Dry season (strangely cloudy, cooler in June-September)

Best time on East Coast:

December to March - Wet season (blue sky & burning hot sun during the day)

Bigger swell: May to October.

Break type: Beach and reef breaks.

Going there from Singapore:

1) Fly 2h45mn direct to Denpasar

2) Drive 30 to 60mn to most of the spots

About the place:

Bali doesn't need an introduction. It's definitely the place to go when you don't know where to go. All break types, all wave sizes, year-round possibilities for all surfers of all levels: most of this within an hour drive from the airport. If you drive futher, you'll find few more waves, and less people. With about 10 flights connecting Singapore daily, Bali is maybe the safest weekend warrior destination.

April to November is generally the high season, with more tourists, more surfers and higher air fares. However it seems there is no low season for surfers. Enter the water at dawn to beat the crowd and get glassy waves.

On very big days, intermediates surfers can check the protected surf in Sanur or Jimbaran.

On very small days, intermediates can get a chance to score Uluwatu (generally January to March).

Indonesia / LOMBOK

Surf season: year-round.

Bigger swell: April to October.

Better winds: November to March.

Break type: Beach and reef breaks.

Going there from Singapore:

1) Fly 2h45mn direct to Lombok

2) Drive 30mn to Kuta

About the place:

Lombok's surf epicenter is in Kuta (same name but so much different than Kuta in Bali). This place reflects what it's like everywhere in Lombok: quieter, less crowded, less developped. Sand is whiter and water is bluer on Lombok's Beaches.

In term of surf possibilities, Lombok has much to offer. With waves facing all directions, surf is year-round. The swell is bigger April to October, but winds are generally more favorable from November to April. In term of accessibility, Lombok is a notch below Bali. Only one daily flight connects Singapore daily (though there's very frequent flights from Jakarta and Bali). From Mawi to Gerupuk Bay, most of the spots can be reached within a 30mn drive from Kuta.
