The southern tip of India is shared between two states: Kerala, occupying the West Coast, and Tamil Nadu, on the East Coast. With coastlines facing opposite directions, Kerala and Tamil Nadu alternatively provide surf options in all seasons.

Trivandrum Airport is the starting point of any surf trip in South Kerala and South Tamil Nadu. To reach the surf spots further north in Kerala, Kochi Airport has direct connections with Singapore. And direct flights from Singapore to Chennai provide access to the northern beaches of Tamil Nadu.

Along the coast, north and south of Thiruvananthapuram (f.k.a. Trivandrum), the beaches receive plenty of swell, with beach and reef breaks. The main surfing areas are Varkala, in the north, and Kovalam, in the south. These places have been prominant tourist destinations for long, but surfing came into the spotlight only recently. Varkala area is characterized by a dramatic coastline with red limestone cliffs.
